A Flying Hoverboard? This Is Impossible But It’s True!

Described as a self-balancing two-wheeled board, who doesn’t know hoverboards? Since the release of the 1989 movie “Back to the Future Part II”, this futuristic means of transportation has been making buzz around the internet for quite a long time now. In fact during the 90’s, there were rumors that these levitation boards were in fact real but sadly not marketed due to safety issues. Though, this myth has been debunked a long time ago and was believed to be a part of the movie’s marketing campaign.

But what if I told you today that there’s a real flying hoverboard? Of course you would only call me crazy and out of my mind but what you’re about to discover will literally make your jaw drop to amazingness! A genius, more than a genius actually, 30-year-old Romanian-born Canadian inventor named Catalin Alexandru Duru has actually made the very first levitation board using his own design and construction. I couldn’t believe it either but this in fact is so real!

The man of the hour, Catalin Alexandru Duru!

Duru, a Montreal resident and graduate of Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal began his career as a visual effects artist making 3D projects for well-known people like Robert Lepage. But his buddy and currently business partner Phillippe Maalouf said to Duru to leave visual effects and make something that can change the world. And indeed, the whiz kid himself made this possible!

Catalin Alexandru Duru had been working on a flying hoverboard prototype for about five years now and last August, he filmed himself grazing over the lake of Montreal flying! Before contacting Guinness Book of World Records, Duru was able to fly using his hoverboard at 130 kilometers. With some adjustments and device modification, he contacted Guinness to try and set another record. And boy before you knew it, he was able to fly using his levitation board at a whopping 250 meters at a height of 5 meters above Lake Ouareau!

Duru and his masterpiece in action!

With their new company called “All Terrain Hoverboard”, Duru and his business partner Phillippe Maalouf is said to release the retail version of this levitation hoverboard hopefully next year. It would be manufactured outside of Canada and according to them, they are “close” to finishing and testing the newest model.

This project is funded by a private sector while some funds came from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. When asked about the price, Duru said the first generation will more likely be “quite expensive”.
